Aromatherapy for Stress: Lavender, Bergamot, and Workplace Stress

Aromatherapy for stress is one of the ways scent can support a calmer massage experience when it is used thoughtfully, safely, and with the client’s comfort in mind. In my Rockaway Township massage practice, aromatherapy is optional, individualized, and always secondary to good communication and professional care.

A small aromatherapy research project

As part of my clinical aromatherapy certification, I participated in a small research project looking at whether lavender and bergamot essential oils could help reduce perceived stress in a legal work environment.

The study followed 14 legal professionals over three weeks. During the first week, participants completed stress assessments without using essential oils. During the second week, they used placebo inhalers. During the third week, they used personal inhalers containing a blend of Lavandula angustifolia and Citrus bergamia.

The results were encouraging. At baseline, only 4 out of 14 participants rated themselves in the low-stress range. After the essential oil blend was introduced, 10 out of 14 participants rated themselves in the low-stress range.

This was a small educational study, not a medical trial, but it helped shape the way I think about aromatherapy: not as a cure, but as a supportive tool that may help create a calmer nervous-system environment when used thoughtfully and safely.

In my massage practice, aromatherapy is optional and individualized. Essential oils are selected with attention to the client’s comfort, health history, preferences, and safety considerations. For clients dealing with stress, tension, or difficulty slowing down, aroma can sometimes become one more gentle cue that helps the body shift toward rest.

If you are interested in adding scent to your session, you can learn more about aromatherapy massage and ask what may be appropriate for your needs before the appointment begins.
