Sciatica pain and massage therapy
Sciatica describes pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness that travels along the path of the sciatic nerve. Symptoms often move from the low back or hip into the glute, leg, or foot. True sciatica can involve nerve irritation or compression in the low back, so it is important not to assume that every deep glute or leg pain is the same problem.
Some people also experience sciatica-like symptoms from muscle tension, posture, long sitting, repetitive activity, or irritation around the piriformis and surrounding hip muscles. This is sometimes described as piriformis-related pain or pseudo-sciatica. A proper medical diagnosis should come from a qualified healthcare provider.
How massage may help
Massage therapy may help reduce muscle tension in the low back, hips, glutes, and legs. When muscle tension is contributing to discomfort, careful massage, myofascial work, stretching, and pressure adjustments may help improve comfort and ease of movement.
The goal is not to “force” the nerve or dig aggressively into painful tissue. A good session should be specific, careful, and responsive to your symptoms. Pressure should always be adjusted if pain increases, symptoms travel farther down the leg, or numbness or tingling becomes worse.
When to seek medical care
Do not rely on massage alone if you have severe pain, new weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the groin/saddle area, fever, recent trauma, unexplained weight loss, or symptoms that are worsening. These signs need prompt medical evaluation.
If symptoms are chronic, recurring, or related to a known spine condition, check with your healthcare provider before scheduling massage.
Massage at Massage by Bertone
At Massage by Bertone, sessions are adapted to your health history, symptoms, pressure preference, and comfort level. If your discomfort appears muscular, massage may be a useful part of your self-care plan. If your symptoms suggest a more serious nerve or spine issue, medical evaluation is the better first step.

Updated sciatica-related massage note
Updated August 2026: Sciatica-like pain can come from different causes, so it is important to follow medical guidance when symptoms are severe, new, or worsening. When massage is appropriate, sessions can focus on surrounding muscles, comfort, and mobility support. See therapeutic massage or use the appointment page.
