Lavender plants for an aromatherapy blend for stress support

An aromatherapy blend for stress can be a simple way to create a calmer atmosphere before rest, quiet work, or a massage session. For September, this blend idea focuses on lavender and bergamot, two essential oils often chosen for a softer, more settled scent profile.

Aromatherapy blend for stress

Blend theme: stress support and emotional settling.

  • Lavender essential oil: 3 drops
  • Bergamot essential oil: 2 drops
  • Optional sweet orange essential oil: 1 drop

This aromatherapy blend for stress has a soft floral-citrus aroma. Lavender brings a familiar calming note, while bergamot adds a light citrus quality that can make the blend feel brighter and less heavy.

How to use this monthly blend

For a diffuser, add the drops to water according to your diffuser instructions and use it in a well-ventilated room. For a personal aromatherapy inhaler, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for adding essential oils to the cotton wick and assembling the inhaler. Keep the oil-soaked wick enclosed in the inhaler, avoid direct contact with your skin, and inhale gently for a brief scent cue during the day.

If essential oils are used during massage, they should be optional, properly diluted, and selected with attention to comfort, health history, scent preference, and skin sensitivity. Aromatherapy should support the session, not overpower it.

Safety notes for essential oils

  • Do not apply undiluted essential oils directly to the skin.
  • Use caution around children, pets, pregnancy, asthma, allergies, and sensitive skin.
  • Bergamot can be phototoxic unless a bergapten-free version is used, so avoid sun exposure after skin application unless the product is clearly labeled as non-phototoxic.
  • Stop using any oil that causes irritation, headache, nausea, or discomfort.

For general essential oil safety guidance, the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy offers helpful reminders about thoughtful use, dilution, and precautions.

Why this blend fits massage therapy

Massage therapy already gives the body time to slow down through touch, pressure, breathing, and a quiet setting. A gentle aroma can sometimes become one more cue that helps the body settle. It is not a treatment for stress or anxiety, but it may support a calmer massage environment when used thoughtfully.

This monthly aromatherapy blend also connects with my recent article on aromatherapy for stress with lavender and bergamot, which shares a small aromatherapy certification research project involving perceived workplace stress.
